Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What sort of freelancing do you do?
A: I work in the direct marketing field as a consultant, copywriter, and designer. Most of my work is creating direct mail and ads for a variety of companies. My business is called Direct Creative.
Q: Have you created some direct mail I might have seen?
A: Probably. If you’ve received direct mail selling you TurboTax or QuickBooks, there’s a chance I created it. I’ve also done work for American Express, Fortune Magazine, Rodale Publishing, Sprint, and over 200 other clients, large and small.
Q: How did you get into freelancing?
A: That’s a long tale, but I give the short version of my “rags to riches” story in the About section.
Q: What sort of money do you earn?
A: I know there are a handful of freelancers who like to talk specifically about the money they make, but I prefer not to. I’ll say that I earn a very healthy six figures and leave it at that.
Q: What about hobbies or interests outside of freelance work?
A: My wife bought me a nice bike last year and I’ve come to enjoy hour-long bike treks maybe four times a week or so. It clears my mind and gets me away from my desk. I’m also a competitive air gun and bullseye shooter. There are a lot of competitors around here who are lot better than I am, but I’ve won a few medals. I’m near Ohio State University and occasionally enter competitions at their range next to the famous Ohio Stadium. Someday, I’ll try competing in the Nationals. I’m involved with an Ohio political action committee behind the scenes. And I’m also a recovering musician. Or some would say I’m not a musician, just a drummer. Fair enough.
Q: Any other interests?
A: I’m a sci-fi movie fanatic. I’m writing a book about a certain type of sci-fi movie genre and may start a blog on the subject. Maybe.
Q: Why did you decide to start this blog?
A: I have a lot of reasons. But one of the most important is that I want to help other freelancers build their business and create a solid and long-lasting career. My primary sermon is about professionalism. Lots and lots of people freelance, but too many of them get frustrated with it because of low pay, ill-treatment, and impatience. I hope to show that it is possible to rise to the level of “professional” in any area of freelancing, especially for writers and designers.
Q: Married? Kids? Pets?
A: Yes. No. And yes, cats.
